Changing is hard.
First, to change anything in your world, you must be willing to change yourself. And that is hard because it means facing your own inner beliefs. Something strictly connected to your identity and so, easier said than done.
Second, because of the first point, you can't change others. You can only open the way and support them but can't change them. They have to change themselves.
So, on the train taking me back from my last pilgrimage, I reflected on what I had learned through that process that could help me create change.
The first thing that came out was love.
In Liminal Thinking, Dave Gray writes, "The reason that people do things, especially heroic or major things, things that take a lot of effort, is because they care."
People care about what they love. So, I can change only things that I love. Before I change anything, I need to learn to love what I want to change.
However, love is not enough. I also need the agency to act on that love. My agency is my ability to take action or to choose what action to take to fulfil my objectives or aspirations. It's a mix of knowledge, skills, tools and power.
Give anyone love and agency, and they can change the world.
