#1372 - outside all molds
I'm drawn to Bruce Lee's story and work. As with many famous people, it's always hard to draw a line between reality and mythology, but it doesn't matter. On the contrary, it probably adds even more to my fascination.
Anyway, the other day, I found myself again reading about his life and work. In particular, I was reading about Jeet Kune Do, the martial art he created and his struggles in defining it. He wanted to step away from the idea of "style" as a form distinct from other forms. His whole journey into martial arts was about freeing himself "from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds."
He was liminal in the sense that he was aware that, using his words, "truth exists outside all molds; pattern and awareness are never exclusive."
That's how I feel when I think and talk about forms, frameworks or models. They are essential to manifest anything into reality, but we must always remain aware that they are not the truth but just a map or a vessel we use to move forward in our never-ending quest for truth.
Again, let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across, it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one's back. - Bruce Lee
