#1394 - We always have a choice
"I have no choice."
"I cannot do otherwise."
How often have you heard, said, or at least thought something similar?
I have; many times.
Yet, those are just comforting lies.
Because we always have a choice.
Always.
Sometimes, however, there is so much at stake that it's easy to say we don't have one, that we are forced to do something or go in a certain direction.
When we say that we don't have a choice, we are implicitly saying that the other options' costs or consequences are unbearable for us.
But it's a choice.
The problem is that a choice is a responsibility. And when there is a lot at stake, we can't sustain the weight of it. So, we trick ourselves to feel better. However, by doing that, we give away our power.
Like in a life-or-death situation, it may feel like we don't have a choice.
But even then, we have.
Isn't it more powerful to say, "I chose life" instead of "I don't have a choice"?
All of this is to remind myself that I always have a choice. And by owning my choices and the responsibility that comes with them, I am claiming my agency and freedom.
