One Apple A Day #947 - it is so simple
For a long time, I used to connect meaning to size.
An action or gesture becomes more significant with the size of its impact. The problem with this quantitive measure of meaning is that it made me overlook the small things.
Picking up the small piece of garbage left by someone on a beach. Smiling to the cashier at the supermarket. Saying thank you to the officer stopping the cars to let you cross the road.
Then I read Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl.
Frankl wrote that "ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked."
Meaning is subjective.
Nothing has meaning per se.
But I can give meaning to everything.
Even the smallest thing or gesture.
This reflection was sparked by the BeTheChange card that I picked up this morning. Yesterday, I was thinking about how I could be of service to the people around me in a meaningful way.
This morning card says "showing up for others".
Just that.
It is so simple.
Showing up in my whole and authentic uniqueness can be the most meaningful gift I can give to the world.
