One Apple A Day #852 - Resilience
Resilience is indeed a trending topic, and it has been for a while now. You've probably read plenty of articles, watched videos and seen pages promoting programmes and workshops to build you resilience.
Considering that resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, the buzz around this word is a sign that probably things are tough for many.
The first thought that came up for me thinking about resilience is that it is contextual. Or at least, it's not a have it or not kind of attitude. There are situations or areas of my life in which I am resilient. I can fall and bounce back many times without losing my drive. Others in which the first knock out means game over. Yet, I am the same person.
A resilient object or substance is one that has the ability to spring back into shape when deformed by an external force. Like when you bend something elastic like a flexible steel bar; once you release it, it goes back to its original shape. But if you heat the same bar and bend it, it won't go back how it was.
Human beings are complicated, so I feel you may be incredibly resilient under some circumstances and not at all in others. Or you may be able in bouncing back from some solicitations but struggle with others because they hit a weak spot.
Being aware of where and when I am not resilient, allow me to create external structures to protect or reinforce those areas. Maybe sourcing the strength to do so from the resilient parts of me.
