One Apple A Day #68
They get up at 6 am like every day, but they are already awake when the alarm goes on. After 36 days of this morning routine, their bodies had built a sort of automatism. They both go through the morning ritual without thinking. It flows. Mike starts the fire to boil the water while Jon prepares the coffee mugs. Then they do 10 minutes of exercises and stretching while the coffee gets ready. Each one takes his coffee, with a bit of sugar for Jon, and they sit outside their one person tents. For 10 minutes they write in their journals while they sip the coffee. Only when both closed their notepads, they say the first words of the day.
“Morning pal, do you have a good night?”
“Morning, yeah. After yesterday, I would have slept even in the middle of a rumble.”
“Me too. Today should be easier, and the weather looks good.”
“Yep. I’ll find the loo.”
“Enjoy.”
More or less this was the conversation every morning. After those few words, one of them seeks a shelter to relieve himself while the other cleans the mugs, extinguish the fire and pack his tent. This morning Jon is the one seeking for the loo. He hasn’t to go far before he finds a quiet spot, behind a big oak. From there he can see neither the road nor the camp.
He’s lowering his pants when he hears Mike screaming.
