One Apple A Day #396
Gain vs Gap.
A week ago, I watched a webinar presenting a program to change our habits and get more results. Among the various ideas, one made me think for the last few days.
The power of focusing on Gain over Gap.
The core of the idea is that, at the end of a cycle, we should focus on what we’ve learned instead of what is missing to get where we planned. And then use that learning to do better on the next cycle.
But, more than the specific idea, is this “Gain vs Gap” concept that caught my attention.
My first instinct was that focusing on the gain is better. It’s a positive attitude, one focused on learning and based on gratitude.
Though, the “Gap” attitude is the one pulling us towards the result, is the one creating motivation and ambition. Without being aware of that Gap, we may never feel the yearning to move forward and grow.
Then I remember one of the words that define more my current process: integration.
What if it’s not about choosing one over the other, Gain vs Gap? What if the key is to integrate these two perspectives?
So, I designed in my mind the Gain/Gap Index.
I visualise it as a gauge, one that is never fixed but continuously tilts left and right.
If you keep the gauge entirely on the Gain side, you may find peace, but after a while, you risk to become static and transform that peace in your sweet prison. On the other hand, if you are always on the Gap side you will get a lot but never enough. You will get success but never joy.
Like everything in life, I believe the secret lays in awareness.
Where is your Gain/Gap gauge pointing?
