One Apple A Day #27
I saw him as soon as I passed the door of the office. Our office is a room, one big open space with desks and chairs. It’s great for collaboration but it doesn’t provide any place to hide. So I knew that was it. All my plan for a productive start of the morning was gone the moment I saw John. Or better, the moment he saw me. He’s usually not in so early. This is one of the reason I prefer to start before anyone else in the agency. When he arrives to the office there are always other people he can lecture. Not that day. There were only three people in the office. John, the cleaner and me. I couldn’t let him arrases the cleaner guy so I decided to walk towards him.
“Have you read/heard about … ” this is how every conversation with John starts. He’s obsessed about being ahead of everyone else. He is constantly searching for the next big thing. The next big technology or service or idea that will change his life, our lives forever. Somehow it’s good to know someone who’s always so informed about the future. The problem with John is that he lives so much into the future that he has no clues about the present. He’s living Tomorrow, never Today. And he loves to let you know that he’s a day in front of you. That he already know what’s ahead.
Sometimes I’ve been able to answer “Yes, I know this.” I thought that was it. It was like saying “I’m on your page man, I know what you know so let’s go back to our lives”. I was wrong. He always has something else in his pockets. Something you would never know if it wasn’t for him.
So that day I walked to him. I was ready to hear about the last piece of technology that would disrupt my life. Or at least it would disrupt my day. So I was really surprised when he said “Hi” and headed to the coffee corner.
