One Apple A Day #238
“People don’t take trips, trips take people.” – John Steinbeck
The first time I read this quote I was flying back to Italy from Kuwait.
I was sitting next to an old man part of a small group of elderly people. He was holding a bunch of printed sheets, all scraped and full of pen notes as if they were the draft copy of a book. The quote was the first line of the cover.
I can’t help but ask the man what was it about. He explained to me that it was a homemade guide that he prepared for the journey they just did in Cambogia. We ended up talking about travelling and the pleasure of discovering new places. Despite the age, I guess that it was in his late seventies, he was curious and ready to expand his mind and knowledge travelling.
What a lesson.
Trips take people no matter the age or the experience.
Yesterday marked one year from the beginning of my biggest adventure so far. My road trip in Patagonia with my best friend. The memory of that departure reminded me this quote. When I left, I thought I was going on a real adventure, to discover new places with my best friend. I came home, three weeks and five thousand km later with the awareness that the real adventure is our friendship.
