One Apple A Day #226
“We achieve results in life not because we are objective but because we care.” - Dave Gray
I can’t remember how many time I’ve been told to be objective at work. To leave out the emotions and be rational because emotions can weaken our ability to do the right thing.
And I bought that idea. For years I believed that the only way to be efficient, to do the right thing was to be purely rational. I thought that emotions and feeling were potential obstacles getting in the way of our best judgement.
Yet, over the years I saw plenty of perfectly logical and rational plan fail without apparent reasons. And because they were so rational it was hard to realise they were failing until it was too late. At that point, we had to put a lot of effort to find rational reasons why everything went south.
Later on, when I started my process to become a coach, I understood that it is impossible to leave out my emotions and feelings. We can cut out an essential part of ourselves because we are an indivisible whole.
All those projects failed because planning was guided logic, but the execution was driven by emotions. We are not machines, we are human. Emotions and feelings are an integral part of who we are. We must learn to listen to our emotions and create trust in our organisations so everyone will feel comfortable in expressing them always. Even when you are making a rational plan.
