One Apple A Day #178
Bajo Caracoles, January 8th, 2017
We woke up this morning with the day before still in our minds, ears, eyes and backs. There was also a bit of dizziness from the dinner, and the wine shared with Pablo.
We knew we had to leave early, partly because there were no places where we could have a coffee and partly because, after the marvellous previous day, we were eager to see what lays ahead. We also needed some gasoline for the truck and the only Gas Station in town was closed and out of gas.
We headed straight to Bajo Caracoles. It was a marked with a big dot on our map so, even if it was 150km away, we were sure to find everything we needed: coffee and gasoline.
So, here we are. After 2 hours of a straight white road that woke us up with its bumps and the usual mindblowing panorama, we reached that dot in the map. And, surprise, it is precisely that. A dot on a map. No real town, no roads, no restaurants and café.
There is only one gas station, with a sign saying that they run out of gas, and a closed tyre shop and a building that acts as a hotel, coffee shop, restaurant, small market, tourist point.
We are sure the place was better decades ago when they built it. Now it just does its job; we bought coffee from the bar and a piece of cake from the shop. Enough to wake us up.
We the tank of Crichetta drying up and the empty jerrycan, we had only one option. Drive back to Perito Moreno to find gasoline. It’s quite a detour, 130 kilometres, but we will be back on the Ruta40, and our perception of distances has already changed.
