One Apple A Day #1077
Everything moves fast in the world. At least in the world that I live in.
There is a visible sense of urgency everywhere. Everyone moves as if they have to be somewhere as quickly as possible. People do two or three things in parallel so they can increase their output.
The other day I needed to go to the supermarket, and I caught myself thinking about taking a taxi to save time. Then I decided to walk. And in the time it took me to walk to the supermarket and back, I listened to an inspiring podcast on climate change.
And in that walk, I thought that any time we walk, we contribute to improving the air quality for everyone.
So, maybe that's a bold action that we all can take; slowing down.
Last year, during the lookdown, we witnessed the impact that reducing the speed of our lives has on the environment.
Sometimes I feel that all our effort to find answers to humanity's significant challenges, like climate change, are in reality limited by the desire to keep our lifestyle and our speed.
We want electric cars because we want to reduce air pollution without slowing down. But what would happen if we all slow down, so we can walk more and use the car less?
Starting from me. When I'm back in my village in Italy, I use the car to visit my sister who lives less than ten minutes away so that I can spare a few minutes to do a bit more.
This is my pledge; I'm going to slow down.
