Have you ever experienced information fatigue?
It is a feeling of mental exhaustion created by attempting to assimilate excessive amounts of information.
I do.
And lately, I've been talking with a few friends who experienced something similar.
There's so much to read, watch, learn out there. And it is so easy to access. Plus, the world is changing at such a speed. New beautiful models, concepts, theories, tools keep emerging. The combination of natural curiosity, the will to make an impact, and the desire to keep up with the world's speed can lead to information fatigue.
When that happens, my attention gets fragmented. Also, my ability to retain information gets depleted.
I found a solution in conversations.
When I engage in conversations, I'm not passively flooding my brain with information like when I'm reading or watching a talk.
In the space created by the conversation, both my attention and my retention increase. I can be more present, and my brain is actively engaged in exploring what is shared instead of just trying to find a place to archive information.
