I have the feeling that this post will be concise.
I have no idea of what I will write, and I don't feel particularly brilliant today.
Right now, I'm just typing my thoughts as they emerge.
Combining an empty mind, a task to complete, and a timer ticking can be paralysing. With every second, the pressure to produce something increase. So, I flipped the phone upside down to hide the screen and the timer.
Without the measure of time, I feel a kind of release in my body.
While doing that, I remember the first time I went to motorcycle sport riding school on track.
After the safety brief, the instructor went to each of our bikes and put some gaffer tape over the speedometer. He made sure to cover it entirely, so we had no way to see our speed.
He explained that knowing the speed was useless, and it could be even dangerous for novices like us. He saw too many students obsessed with checking their speed and forget to focus on their driving. And on track, any distraction can mean crashing.
Metrics and measures are essential in life, but we must be sure they don't get in the way or divert our attention from the actual work.
