I've learned through this practice that sometimes, you have to start before you're ready. There are mornings in which I don't know where to start, not even the tiniest idea to hang onto, not even a word to break the white of the empty page.
In the beginning, whenever I found myself in this creative void, I used to wait for any idea to come. Some mornings I sat there in silence, waiting in vain for an illumination. Other mornings I scanned through my bookmarks and note, hoping to find some inspiration.
Meanwhile, time passed, the paper remained blank, and the pressure increased. A fifteen minutes practice stretched to half an hour or more to write something that, too often, I wasn't particularly proud of.
Over the months, I've learned that waiting to be ready won't make me ready.
So, I just start the timer and begin to write.
Sometimes the words flow like a raging river, and sometimes they drip out slowly. It doesn't matter as long as I'm typing.
Most of my most cherished posts are short and unexpected.
However, to be able to start even when you're not ready, you must cultivate trust. Trust in your creativity. Trust that once you begin to move, the Muse will join you.
Funny thing, the best way to cultivate that kind of trust is by starting when you're not ready.
