My Inner Bodyguard
#2057
One of the brain’s tasks is to keep you alive.
I picture it as if there’s a guy in my head acting like a bodyguard.
And this imaginary bodyguard within me is constantly focused on keeping me from hurt and pain. This inner bodyguard doesn’t like uncertainty and prefers the safety of the familiar. However, to grow, our brain needs challenges. And challenges are risky.
So, to grow, I need to quiet my inner bodyguard so I can jump into the unfamiliar and see what happens. But how can I do that if this bodyguard lives in my head?
One thing I found very effective is to work with someone who makes me feel safe. Safe enough for my inner bodyguard to relax and take a break. To go somewhere else and enjoy a coffee while I challenge my thinking, step into unfamiliar terrain, and grow.
If you have someone like that in your life—a friend, mentor, coach, colleague, partner—you know what I’m talking about. When you are in their presence, your mind opens up, and you can see more.
I strive to be that person for others.
So, if you need someone to send your inner bodyguard away for a coffee break for a little while, let me know. Maybe I can help.
