Move
#2161

A few days ago, I came back from India.
And I didn’t just return to my usual place; I returned to my usual self.
I’m not the same person here as I am when I’m in India. Or in any other place. It’s always me, obviously. But a different version.
I talk, move, act, and respond differently. I even think and feel differently. And I’m not just talking about adapting to a different language or new customs.
Something shifts deep inside.
It is as if every environment echoes a different part of who I am, and urges it out. As a result, my behaviours change. I become more or less extroverted, more or less willing to take risks.
Kurt Lewin’s equation states that human behaviour is a function of the person and their environment: B = f(P, E).
So, we behave differently in different spaces. But it goes deeper than that. Over time, our repeated behaviours shape how we think and who we become. This means the environment plays a critical, active role in our inner growth.
Like everything in nature. A seed won’t flourish in just any soil.
My takeaway is this: if you feel you’re not flourishing where you are, maybe you don’t need to force a change on the inside.
Maybe you just need to change your outside.
