#1417 - Obvious
"Obvious" is a tricky word to use.
When we say something is obvious, we imply that it is easily understood and self-evident. We are attributing objectiveness to our subjective perception of reality.
In fact, is useful to remember that reality, as a whole, is unknowable, so we all experience reality subjectively.
So, when we say something is obvious, we assume others must see the same reality we see. And if they don't, they must be mistaken, dumb or ill-intentioned.
And then, "the battle for the obvious", as Dave Gray calls it in his book "Liminal Thinking", begins.
I am not saying there isn't an objective reality. But I recognize that my experience of it is subjective. And the only thing I can know and share is my experience.
If we acknowledge the subjectivity of our experience of reality, we will transform any conversation into a great opportunity to learn, grow and create.
Unfortunately, it's easier said than done. In particular, when someone challenges well-known, studied and proven stuff, I find it hard. But I'm getting better.
