#1279 - the gap
There's a gap between knowing and doing. And in that gap, so much potential is lost.
Stephen R. Covey, the author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, wrote that "to learn and not to do is really not to learn. To know and not to do is really not to know."Yet, it is so easy to get lost in that gap between knowing what to do and doing what I know.
The reasons are many.
Sometimes I'm worried about not knowing enough, so I keep gathering information and knowledge, but instead of getting ready, I push the doing even further. Until the gap becomes so wide and deep, I can't escape it.
Then there are times when I just lack the courage. Knowing without doing can feel so much safer. I keep playing what I want to do in my mind, like a movie. And it's gratifying enough to stay there without taking real action. Because, let's be honest, to do means to get out of the comfort of my mind and go into the wild world out there.
Then there's laziness, even if I guess it is usually just a sign of a lack of clarity about why I want to transform what I know into what I do.
The main reason, however, is the web of beliefs, stories and habits I wrapped myself in. That's why I have coaches or mentors. They help me see that web and find the gaps in it from where I can get out and move from knowing to doing.
